In India the first case of the BA.4 Omicron sub-variant in a nineteen-year woman was confirmed in Tamil-Nadu by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). She had no travel history and was completely vaccinated.

The new sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 were highly-transmissible Omicron variant of the virus.

Previously, Hyderabad reported one positive case for the BA.4 sub-variant in a traveller from South Africa and one BA.5 sub-variant positive case in an 80-year-old man in Telangana. He showed mild symptoms and was also fully vaccinated and had no history of travelling.

INSACOG said that the sub-variants did not cause severe symptoms or hospitalizations and as precautionary measures, tracing of the close contact of these sub-variant cases was being carried out. (NDTV, May 22, 2022)
